If instead of 22.5 g of the disodium salt of 3-aminophthalic acid, an equivalent amount of the disodium salt of 4-aminophthalic acid is employed and in other respects the procedure indicated in the above example is followed, 4-(di-methylmaleinimidyl)-phthalic anhydride of melting point 197° C. is obtained.
