The trichothecene therapeutic agent 16-oxo verrucarin A is prepared by selenium dioxide oxidation of verrucarin A. The MAb hydrazide is then reacted with 16-oxo verrucarin A at 4C overnight with agitation, thereby yielding a unique Schiff base-linked targeting substance conjugate having the following structure: ##STR29##
