Reaction of 2-{2-[2-(2-Chlorophenyl)ethenyl]-5-methoxy-1H-indol-1-yl}ethanol (III; Ar=2-chlorophenyl, R10═CH2CH2OH) (44) prepared according to example 41 with maleimide according to the procedure described in example 68 gave 4-(2-Chlorophenyl)-6-(2-hydroxyethyl)-9-methoxy-4,5,6,1 Oc-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]carbazole-1,3(2H, 3aH)-dione (IV; Ar=2-chlorophenyl, R10═CH2CH2OH) (45) in a 79% yield as an oily solid, which was used without further purification.
