Mode opératoire

A mixture of 4-hydroxymethyl-5-methylimidazole hydrochloride (15.0 g.), cysteamine hydrochloride (11.5 g.) and a solution of hydrogen bromide in acetic acid (48%, 225 ml.) was heated under reflux for 7 hours. Cooling afforded 4-methyl-5-[(2-aminoethyl)thiomethyl]imidazole dihydrobromide (21.6 g.), m.p. 208°-211°.
