Mode opératoire

A mixture of 32.68 g of N-butyl-N-methylamine (0.375 mol) and 23.66 g of diisopropylcarbodiimide (0.1875 mol) is heated at reflux for 3 hours. GC analysis then shows a conversion of more than 99.5% of the diisopropylcarbodiimide. The final mixture, which is colorless, is concentrated at 60° C. under 5 mbar for 2 hours, to give 40 g of a colorless and virtually odorless liquid of low viscosity, which corresponds to the expected guanidine (100% yield).
