A mixture of 30.0 gm (0.176 mole) of o-chlorophenyl-acetic acid and 40.0 mL of thionyl chloride was stirred at ambient temperature for 18 hours. The volatiles were then removed in vacuo to give 32.76 gm (99.0 %) of o-chloro-phenylacetyl chloride as a transparent, pale yellow, mobile liquid.
