Mode opératoire

The mixture of equivalent of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 20 equivalents of 1,4-butane sultone is stirred at 40° C. (temperature in the oil-bath) for 24 hours). The excess of 1,4-butane sultone was distilled off in vacuum and the residue was dried overnight at 50° C. in high vacuum (1·10−3mbar). Liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 4-chlorobutylsulfonate is obtained in close to quantitative yield. The material was characterized by NMR spectroscopy.
