Procedure

Hydrazine monohydrate (4.41 ml, 90.9 mmol) was added via syringe to a 250-ml round-bottom flask containing 50 ml of distilled water with stirring at room temperature. Trifluoroacetic acid (7.0 ml, 90.9 mmol) was added via syringe and the reaction was stirred at room temperature overnight. The water was removed in vacuo with heating to 80° C., yielding product as a colorless liquid.
