Procedure

p-Bromo-benzaldehyde (10.0 g, 54 mmol) was mixed with 100 ml of ethanol/water (95/5), 8.3 g of ammonium acetate (108 mmol), and 11.2 g of malonic acid (108 mmol), heated under reflux at 80° C. with stirring for 17 hours, filtered under heating and dried under reduced pressure to give 8.3 g of p-bromo-β-phenylalanine crystals at a yield of 62.8%.
