Procedure

A reaction vessel was charged with 108 g (1 mole) of p-cresol, 162 g (2 moles as HCHO) of 37% formalin and 4 g (0.1 mole) of sodium hydroxide, and reaction was carried out at 80° C. for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, neutralized with 2 N hydrochloric acid and washed with water to obtain 98 g of a resol type p-cresol/formaldehyde resin. The number average molecular weight Mn of the obtained resin was 330 as determined according to the vapor pressure osmometry in dimethylacetamide at 90° C.
