Procedure

Ammonium gas is bubbled through a solution of N-(3,4-dichlorostyrylsulfonyl)-3,4-dimethoxybenzimidoyl chloride (8.7 g., 0.02 mole) in 100 ml. of dry benzene for a period of 1 hr. The solvent evaporated under reduced pressure and the solid residue stirred with 50 ml. of water and filtered affords 8.0 g. (96% yield) of N-(3,4-DICHLOROSTYRYLSULFONYL)-3,4-DIMETHOXYBENZAMIDINE, m.p. 205°-210° C. A sample crystallized from acetonitrile has a melting point of 208°-211° C.
