Procedure

211 g (1.13 moles) of 2-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-toluene, 251 g (1.41 moles) of N-bromosuccinimide and 2 g of azoisobutyronitrile in 1300 ml of dry 1,1,1-trichloroethane are refluxed, an additional 1 g of azoisobutyronitrile is added to the reaction mixture after one hour, and heating is continued for a further hour.
