Procedure

Reaction of 4-methyl-5-phenyl-1H-imidazole (400 mg, 2.53 mmol), NaH (60%, 98 mg, 2.46 mmol), and SEMCl (474 uL, 2.68 mmol) followed by column chromatography on silica gel (hexane/EtOAC 3:2) gave the title compound (323 mg, 46%) as a yellow solid. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 0.00 (s, 9H), 0.92 (t, 2H, J=7.5 Hz), 2.47 (s, 3H), 3.52 (t, 2H, J=7.5 Hz), 5.26 (s, 2H), 7.26–7.27 (m, 1H), 7.41 (dd, 2H, J=7.5, 7.5 Hz), 7.57 (s, 1H), 7.68 (d, 2H, J=9.0 Hz).
