Procedure

To a solution of Ethyl 4-(4-(2,5-dimethylbenzyloxy)phenyl)-4-oxobutyrate (Step B, 2.62 g, 7.7 mmol) in abs ethanol (30 ml) was added 1N NaOH (10 ml) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred for 3 hours and then acidified with 1M HCl. The occuring white precipitate was filtered, washed with water and dried under vacuum to provide the title compound as a white solid.
