Procedure

A solution of ethyl 2-(3,4-dimethoxybenzoyl)-acetate (25.2 g) and N,N-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal (17.9 g) in tetrahydrofuran (100 ml) was refluxed for 18 hours under stirring. The reaction mixture was evaporated in vacuo to give ethyl 2-(3,4-dimethoxybenzoyl)-2-(dimethylaminomethylene)acetate (31.09) as an oil.
