Procedure

Using our nonsolvent method, nanocrystals of ZIF-7 are synthesized by first dissolving 20 mmol of benzimidazole in 50 mL DMF followed by addition of 5 mmol zinc nitrate hexahydrate dissolved in 50 mL methanol. After mixing the DMF/benzimidazole and Methanol/Zinc solutions for 1 hr under vigorous stirring, phase-pure ZIF-7 nanocrystals are formed (see expected PXRD pattern in FIG. 4). The nonsolvent method produces ZIF-7 crystals approximately 199 nm with a 5 nm standard deviation based on DLS measurements (see FIG. 5). The yield of the synthesis is 0.33 gram and 0.53 gram of crystals formed per gram of benzimidazole ligand and Zinc used, respectively.
