Following the procedure of Example 1 (4), ethyl 2-ethoxycarbonyl-2-hydroxy-4-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4-oxobutanoate was reacted to yield the title compound as a pale brown crystalline powder (yield: 91.4%).
