Employing the same general procedure as for the preparation of ethyl 4-[(5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-8,8-dimethyl-5-oxonaphth-2-yl)ethynyl]benzoate (Compound 1), 143 mg (0.57 mmol) of 6-ethynyl-3,4-dihydro-1(2H)-(3-pentylidene)-4,4-dimethylnaphthalene (Compound W) was converted into the title compound using 142 mg (0.51 mmol) of ethyl 4-iodobenzoate, 36 mg (0.19 mmol) of cuprous iodide and 130 mg (0.19 mmol) of bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II) chloride.
