5-Benzyl-4-oxazolecarboxylic acid is converted to 5-benzyl-4-hydroxymethyl xazole by the procedure of Example 135. Treating this hydroxymethyl compound with thionyl chloride gives 5-benzyl-4-chloromethyloxazole.
