A solution of phloroglucinol (0.87 g) and ethyl 2-(2-phenylethyl)acetoacetate (1.62 g) in ethanol (30 ml) was treated with dry HCl as described in example 1a. Yield: 1.77 g (87%). Melting point 248-252° C.
