Following the procedure of Example 1 (4), ethyl 4-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-2-ethoxycarbonyl-2-hydroxy-4-oxo-butanoate was reacted to yield the title compound as a pale yellow crystalline powder (yield: 88.9%).
