The title compound (15 g; 84%) was prepared from N-methylbenzylamine (10.08 g; 83 mmol), cyclopentanone (7 g; 83 mmol) and potassium cyanide (5.41 g; 83 mmol) in water (45 ml) in a similar manner to that described in D1. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ: 1.90 (6H, m), 2.20 (3H, s), 2.3 (2H, m), 3.62 (2H, s), 7.25 (1H, m), 7.32 (4H, m); Mass Spectrum (Electrospray LC/MS): Found 188 (MH+−HCN). C14H18N2 requires 214. Ret. time 1.21 min.
