A degradable linking agent is formed by reacting methylenebis(phosphonic dichloride) (1 eq) with 4-hydroxybenzophenone (2 eq) in anhydrous DCM using pyridine (2.5 eq) as a base. The resulting product can be converted into its salt to increase water solubility.
