To a solution of trans-4,6,6a,8,9,10a-hexahydro-10a-methyl-1-(2,4,6-triisopropylphenylsulfonyl)-7H-indolo[3,4-gh][1.4]benzoxazine (106 mg, 0.21 mmol) in ethyl acetate (10 ml) was added a saturated aqueous solution of sodium carbonate (2 ml). To the mixture was added, while stirring vigorously, chloroacetyl chloride (1.2 equivalent). After completion of the reaction, the organic layer was separated, washed with an aqueous saline solution and dried (anhydrous Na2SO4). The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the residue was subjected to a silica gel column chromatography, eluting with n-hexane-ethyl acetate (4:1) to afford 109 mg (89%) of the title compound as an amorphous crystalline product.
