4-[(1-Pyrenyl)carbonyl]benzoic acid, methyl ester (2.55 g; 7 mmol) was dissolved in 25 ml of benzene. A solution of 354 mg (6.4 mmol) of KOH in 5 ml MeOH was added, and the mixture boiled. Preciptation of the potassium salt occurred. The mixture was extracted with water to give a yellow water layer which was acidified with dilute HCl to give a light yellow precipitate. Filtration gave 1.73 g (5 mmol) of the 4-[(pyrenyl)carbonyl]benzoic acid.
