The reaction of 9-hydroxy-4-iodopyrrolo[3,4-c]carbazole-1,3(2H,6H)-dione, prepared as in example 7, with 2,6-dimethylbenzeneboronic acid according to the procedure described in example 8 gave 4-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-9-hydroxypyrrolo[3,4-c]carbazole-1,3(2H,6H)-dione (17) (I, Ar=2,6-dimethylphenyl) in a 62% yield; mp 230–238° C. (dec). 1H NMR δ [(CD3)2SO] 11.72 (s, 1H), 10.95 (s, 1H), 9.25 (s, 1H), 8.32 (d, J=2.3 Hz, 1H), 7.44 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 1H), 7.35 (s, 1H), 7.20 (t, J=7.5 Hz, 1H), 7.12 (d, J=7.5 Hz, 2H), 7.06 ((dd, J=8.7, 2.3 Hz, 1H), 1.93 (s, 6H). EIMS found M+: 356,1159, C22H16N2O3 requires 356,1161.
